BMW i3 Electric Vehicles to Feature Advanced Range Technology

When BMW set out to design its first all-electric vehicle for the new BMW lineup, it wanted to offer the very best in terms of technology. It also wanted to make EV vehicles more desirable to drivers by developing solutions to improve upon driving ranges and lengthy charging times. As the unveiling of the BMW i3 gets closer, the automaker is releasing some of the details regarding its plan to make its EV model a more suitable choice.

The solution to the driving range dilemma involves a ConnectedDriver infotainment system. BMW crafted it to be able to read topography and real-time traffic data, giving the vehicle a more accurate driving range. In the event that the system estimates the vehicle's charge won't get you to your destination, it will navigate you to the closest charging station within range.

For increased efficiency of the i3, it comes with three different driving modes: Comfort, Eco Pro and Eco Pro+. By using these modes when applicable, the vehicle will be able to get more miles out of a single charge.

Comfort is the default mode, and provides the vehicle with a driving range of about 100 miles. When switched into Eco Pro, it remaps the throttle to increase the range by 10 percent. The most efficient mode Eco Pro+, sets a speed limit to 56 miles per hour on the vehicle, switches the climate control into power-saving mode, and alters the transmission's gearing. When embarking on simple excursions that don't involve highway travel, this setting would provide the vehicle with the largest driving range.
