Diesel-powered BMWs have been popular overseas for a long time now. The diesel BMW models offer compelling performance and efficiency, however, it has never taken as strong of a hold of the U.S. market.
It's not that BMW haven't tried, for example, back in '83 they released a diesel BMW into the market. At the time, it was the world's fastest production car. Yet, it was on the market for just one model year.
In 2009, BMW tried again but the this time the push was to sell diesel as a sporty alternative to gasoline. To some extent, it worked. A 3 Series model was designed capable of delivering 0-60 in 5.3 seconds. With this model, BMW revolutionized exactly what the petrol-alternative was capable of. A diesel BMW X5 CUV with a 0-60 second sprint time of just 6.9 seconds quickly followed.
Today, drivers across the U.S. are aware that performance will always remain at the core of every BMW made, including the luxury automaker's diesel models. To make things even easier, contemporary drivers, as a whole, demand greater fuel efficiency. Hence, comes the official announcement that BMW will be bringing 2, oil-burning engines with enhanced efficiency stateside
The first new model will feature a turbo 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and there will be a turbo 3.0-liter 6-cylinder. They are expected to be rated at 180 hp and 255 hp respectively. And, according to reports you can expect to see the 4-cylinder in both the 3 Series and X1; the 6-cylinder - in the X3 and X5.
