BMW was proud to be the Official Mobility Partner of the United States Olympic Committee during this summer's Olympic Games in London. On Day Eight of the games, right before Michael Phelps won Gold in the Men's 100m Butterfly, they decided to announce they were taking their sporting abilities from the track to the pool. BMW announced they created a one-of-a-kind device designed especially to help swimming coaches identify form that serves to improve performance as well as those that can be improved.
One of the things they're most excited for is the technology's ability to identify which movements and physical forms produce the strongest, fastest dolphin kicks. Even if coaches are able to use the tool to shave off just .01 second from a swimmer's time, they'd be happy. For, as all of us who had our eye's glued to the Games know, that can be all it takes to make or break victory.
To develop the system they used existing automotive technology that can be found in new BMW cars and joined it with cutting-edge, under-water cameras. BMW also went so far as to add a software system capable of tracking six points on a swimmer's body: 1)wrists 2)shoulders 3)hips 4)knees 5)ankles 6)toes. This lends coaches an invaluable mix of focused and collective analysis.
As you can see, by the time the next summer Olympics come around, swimmers' competitive edge will be sharper than ever.
