AutoGuide on New 2016 BMW i3 Electric Subcompact: Great Range, Innovative Gas Engine Option

BMW is doing very interesting work on hybrid vehicles, as evidenced by the 2016 BMW i3, an electric subcompact that has a gas engine available as an optional add-on. AutoGuide recently reviewed the i3 and liked its great range and innovative styling. Click "play" on the video clip below to watch the full report.

The i3's 450-pound lithium-ion battery pack sends power to a rear-mounted electric motor producing 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. As equipped, the car is capable of traveling 81 miles on a single charge. AutoGuide suggests that those looking for a bit more range may want to opt for the i3 Rex, which includes a range-extending gasoline engine.

With the range extender engine installed, the i3 weighs just a bit more than 3,000 lbs. The extra weight shrinks the car’s all-electric range to just 72 miles, but overall range including the gasoline generator grows to an official figure of 150 miles.
