Uncovering More Details Regarding the BMW i8 Plug-In Hybrid

As you may have noticed, our BMW blog has been filled with details regarding the new BMW i3 mode lately, as it recently made its global debut. While we could go on for days providing you more exciting news about the electric model, we thought we'd take the opportunity to highlight some details of the closely related BMW i8 plug-in hybrid.

Set to make its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, fans are anxiously awaiting for the second addition to be made to the BMW i Series lineup. The i8 model will not only be the first BMW sports car to offer a hybrid powertrain, it will also be the first model to ever include Gorilla Glass, a scratch resistant, chemically hardened material that is used to make smartphones.

Gorilla Glass is lighter, more durable, and sound deadening than other types of glass used for automobiles. In terms of the i8 plug-in hybrid, it features the glass in the rear window to help minimize sound. The glass will be laminated like normal for a car, and 0.7mm layers will be placed on either side of an acoustic layer. This enhances the luxurious interior of the model by make it quieter, and contributes to the model's lightweight construction.

According to BMW, the i8 will be composed of several lighter materials that will help to compensate for the weight of a hybrid powertrain system. It is estimated the production model will weigh in at about 3,285 pounds. Here at Rick Hendrick BMW, we are definitely looking forward to its arrival at our Charleston, SC showroom once it is released to the U.S. market.

Until then, we have a great selection of new BMW models for you to check out. With a blend of style, efficiency, and technology that can't be beat, we are excited to show you around and assist you in finding the model that is a perfect match for your lifestyle!
